- Am 17. Dezember 1938 erhielt Günther Prien sein erstes Kommando, das von U-47, einem brandneuen U-Boot vom Typ VIIB. Er war damals der jüngste Offizier, dem eines der Flaggschiffe der Kriegsmarine anvertraut wurde. Im Februar 1939 wurde er im Alter von 31 Jahren zum Leutnant befördert. Einige Monate später, im Oktober, wurde er zur Legende, als er am 14. Oktober 1939 das Kunststück vollbrachte, in die Bucht von Scapa Flow (im Norden Schottlands) einzudringen und das britische Schlachtschiff HMS Royal Oak zu versenken.

Quelques mois plus tard, en octobre, il entre dans la légende en réussissant l'exploit de pénétrer à l'intérieur de la baie de Scapa Flow (au nord de l'Écosse) pour y couler le cuirassé britannique HMS Royal Oak le 14 Octobre 1939.
