The 336 Fighter Generation Squadron was activated on 1 October 2021 at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. Days later the newly stood up FGS deployed to the EUCOM theatre of operations in support of Operation Castle Forge. After six weeks of operations in Larissa,

Greece the unit forward deployed to RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom as part of a Secretary of Defense Order designed to deter Russian aggression in the region. The Rockets became the first CONUS unit to execute armed Agile Combat Employment dispersals in theatre as well as the first F-15E unit to be fully certified to execute NATO Enhanced Air Policing. As part of this initiative the unit executed seven different ACE dispersals across four different nations - becoming the first American unit ever to execute the NATO Enhanced Air Policing Mission in Romania and Estonia. In the days preceding the Russian invasion of Ukraine during February of 2022, the 336th alert scrambled and generated two F-15E Strike Eagles in a matter of minutes and intercepted two Russian MiG-31 Foxhounds as well as two Su-27 Flankers over Kaliningrad. As the war

in Ukraine ensued the Rockets valiantly defended NATO’s eastern flank, providing 24 hour continual armed over watch while simultaneously supporting non-combatant evacuations across the Ukrainian- Polish border. In total during their first deployment as the newly stood up Fighter Generation Squadron the Rockets conducted operations in six different nations (Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Poland and the United Kingdom) flying a total of 1137 sorties for a total of 2357.7 flying hours and executed 100% of their NATO Air Tasking Order lines. While the deployed unit continued operations in Eastern Europe, the Airmen of the 336th FGS who stayed at homestation were charged with the responsibility of generating training sorties to bolster the combat readiness of homestation aircrew who were slated to deploy into theatre at a moment’s notice. Despite manning shortfalls and resource challenges, the aptly dubbed “Rocket Reserves” stood in the gap and executed their mission with great precision and efficiency, resulting in the highest 336th aircrew combat mission readiness rating in decades. As a result of their excellence in operations, resiliency, and unwavering discipline during their first call to action the 336th Fighter Generation Squadron was named FGS of the Year in the 4th Fighter Wing in 2021 - further cementing their storied heritage and bringing honor to their lineage of being “World Famous.”
