Seeing the limits of their aging F-86 fleet, in 1986 the Janosian Air Self Defense Force began seeking a replacement fighter. After a series of trials, the Ministry of Defense selected the license-built AV8B Hariā in 1988. Produced domestically by Shinomiya Heavy Industries—still riding the success of the F-14AJ program—the AV8B entered service with the 91st Tactical Fighter Squadron ‘Dragons’ in 1989. The squadron quickly earned a reputation for mastery of the aircraft’s short-takeoff and attack capabilities, providing the JASDF with a flexible, reliable platform for air defense and close air support. The 91st remains closely associated with the Hariā, symbolizing the JASDF’s transition into a modern, agile air arm.
