After half a year of defending RAF bases on Malta, an attack on Luftwaffe Bases on Sicily was flown by the Malta-based RAF Spitfires on 4 September 1942. The RAF attack came in three elements at three bases. The plan was to alert the Germans of their presence with fast low passes and then wait for the Luftwaffe aircraft to take off and climb away from the heavy AAA at their airfields. In all three raids, a total of 22 enemy aircraft were shot down that day by the Spitfires.
