I created an instant action type mission to replicate the events on 17 October 1943 over Bougainville.
VMF-214, the Black Sheep Squadron, was established earlier in 1943 and quickly earned a reputation for high-risk fighter sweeps and air combat successes under Boyington’s command. The actions around mid-October 1943 were part of a sustained campaign of air operations in the Solomon Islands aimed at isolating key Japanese strongholds such as Rabaul and reducing enemy capabilities across the theater.
To recreate some of the events on this day, You will start at 21,000 feet trailing a bombing group headed for US airfields. Escort zeros are at 17,000ft and 15,000ft in line formation. a group of betty bombers are at 10,000ft.
