On 19 August 1944, the 406th Fighter Group took off from their base at Cretteville to attack barge traffic hauling supplies to the German army in Normandy. In a rare appearance, the Luftwaffe sent 30 fighters to meet them over the Seine River. The 406th claimed six enemy planes destroyed and three damaged.
