From 11 to 14 September 1970, MACV-SOG conducted Operation Tailwind, its largest and deepest penetration of Laos. Hatchet Force -- 16 Green Berets and 110 Montagnard mercenaries -- patrolled 15 miles through dense jungle, blew up a large NVA ammunition dump and captured a major NVA headquarters along with detailed maps and documents covering the Ho Chin Minh Trail. It is now Day 4 and the mission is being aborted due to an approaching storm. Two CH-53 helicopters already have evacuated two of the three SF platoons. A third is about to board another CH-53 helicopter that is taking ground fire from the NVA forces surrounding the LZ. You are the FAC controlling four A-4Es covering the LZ. Protect the troops and the helicopter.
