Situation Update:
The CVN-71 Carrier Group successfully defended an anti-ship attack by the IAF at midnight on Day 14. The Fifth Fleet commander was also more vigilant regarding the enemy's offensive moves. On the defensive side of the Iranian Army, mobile SAMs consisted of several SA-6 Gainful, SA-8 Gecko, and SA-11 sets that were provided by the Russians and had been deployed in the Iranian-controlled area. With the height suppression from Mount Genu, our ground forces had control over the desert valley in the Rezvan region. Besides the fierce battle in the North Corridor, 50nm to the northeast of Bandar Abbas, in the Faryab region, the Iranians had also sent multiple reinforcements including self-propelled artilleries, armored vehicles, and battle tanks. They had grouped up and their objective is presumably to take back Minab City. The Iranians started a major counter-offensive attack on Day 14 in the Faryab region, causing significant loss to our allied ground forces, whereby the U.S. Marine's 2nd Regiment 1st Battalion had to retreat from Dehbarez back to Kormon. However, two AV-8B Harriers were shot down by SAMs that were newly deployed in the Faryab region, when they were providing close air support for the Marines to retreat from Dehbarez. It was assessed that these Iranian air defenses had upgraded with Russia's latest early-warning radar datalink system with its command center in Jiroft Airbase, which posed a major threat to our air operations in the region. Therefore, neutralizing the Iranian air defense system in the Faryab region now became a priority for our allied forces. A pair of four-ship DEAD Flights were briefed and prepared by the CVN-71 Carrier Group to destroy these SAMs. With engines spooling up on the deck, these pilots signaled "Good to go" with thumbs up, but deeply in their hearts, everyone knew it was going to be a dangerous mission.
