Seafires were used by the British Pacific Fleet (BPF) at a mission in which they excelled: Low-level (below 14,000 feet) Combat Air Patrols. Japanese Kamikaze planes frequently flew low to try to avoid BPF radar so the Seafires stayed low as well. On 4 May 1945 BPF radar spotted four Zekes approaching from the west and three Seafires were vectored to intercept them. You are the Seafire flight leader.

After a series of raids that destroyed petroleum facilities that had been captured by the Japanese from Dutch possessions the British East Fleet became US Navy Task Force 57 of the new British Pacific Fleet. It was given the mission of attacking Japanese kamikaze bases in the Sakishima island chain between Formosa and Okinawa. BPF Corsairs flew ahead of the bombers raiding the airfields and cleared out AAA, Japanese aircraft and other ground targets. This campaign recreates 12 of  the RAMROD and CAP missions flown by the British Corsairs.

On 16 May 1945 the British Pacific Fleet returned to the Japanese Sakishima Gunto air bases to find very few targets. A RAMROD flight of F4Us found a column of Japanese APCs carrying Japanese troops and destroyed it. You are the flight leader of that RAMROD mission.

On 25 May 1945, the BPF moved back to Australia to refit and repair in preparation for the planned invasion of Japan.

On 12 April 1945, British Pacific Fleet radar detected a single aircraft approaching the fleet from Formosa. The aircraft turned out to be a twin engine Ki-46 Dinah reconnaissance plane, capable of high altitudes and speed to match any Allied fighter. A flight of Corsairs was launched to intercept it guided by GCI. You are the flight leader.

Many of the most effective kamikaze attacks on the US fleet off of Okinawa were coming from Japanese airfields on Formosa. Formosa was in the area of responsibility of General MacArthur and the US admirals believed MacArthur wasn't doing enough to deter them. So, the admirals turned to the British Pacific Fleet (BPF), which had been attacking the Japanese in the Sakishima Islands, to switch its efforts to Formosa.

On 9 April 1945, the US admirals, for whom the BPF worked, told the British carrier force to launch a two-day strike against two Japanese bases on Formosa.

They were scheduled to launch the first strikes on 11 April but the weather was so bad, they were postponed for 24 hours.

By 12 April the weather had improved only slightly but the BPF went ahead. When the British planes reached Matsuyama Airfield, the clouds were so thick and low the pilots were told to switch to Japanese ships anchored in nearby Kiirun  Harbor.

A RAMROD of 24 Hellcats and Corsairs was launched against the Sakishima islands at daybreak. Two strikes, each of 24 Avengers were also dispatched, along with four Fireflies armed with rockets. These bombed and strafed Sukama airfield along with nearby harbors and shipping. You lead the first flight and your priority targets are any AAA on shore and any patrol boats armed with anti-aircraft cannon.

Following its attack on the Japanese oil refineries at Palembang, the British Pacific Fleet moved to Sydney, Australia and became a task force of the US Navy. It was assigned to protect the left flank of the invasion of Okinawa. Its four aircraft carriers were tasked with attacking Japanese bases in the Sakishima Islands where Kamikaze planes were fueled and armed to attack the US fleet off Okinawa.

This is your first mission, timed to coincide with the US landings on Okinawa. You are assigned to attack a Japanese airfield to stop the planes there from intercepting the Avenger bombers that will be following you. Ramrod missions such as this preceded every BPF bomber attack.

Operation Meridian was the largest strike mission ever conducted by the Royal Navy. It was aimed at destroying the two oil refineries which provided Japan with 75 percent of its Aviation fuel.

You are a flight leader in Task Force X-Ray, the most dangerous mission in the strike. You will attack the three Japanese air bases around Palembang in order to suppress Japanese fighter reaction to the bombing force coming behind you.

This is the second operation in the British East Fleet's "Oil War" on Japan. The USS Saratoga was ordered home for a refit. On its way to the Pacific, Saratoga was tasked with again joining HMS Illustrious in Operation Transom for a raid on the Japanese oil refinery at Surabaya, Java, Dutch East Indies. The only difference in the lineup from the Operation Cockpit mission was that Illustrious traded its Barracuda bombers for more capable US-built TBF Avenger bombers. Otherwise, the strike force was identical to Operation Cockpit.

The first attackers destroyed 12 Japanese fighters before they could take off from the Surabaya . They also demolished the oil refinery.

You are the leader of the second wave, all Corsairs armed with bombs and rockets, going after the Japanese shipping in the Surabaya Harbor.

Japan had no internal means of obtaining oil. At the beginning of the war it invaded and captured Dutch oil fields, refineries and oil depots in southeast Asia.

On 19 April 1944, the British East Fleet launched its "Oil War" against  Japan with Operation Cockpit attacking  the oil depot at Sabang, an island off the northern tip of Sumatra. HMS Illustrious and USS Saratoga launched 46 bombers and 37 fighters. The bombers attacked the port while the fighters attacked the  large Lho Nga  Airfield, destroying 25 Japanese aircraft on the ground..

SOURCE: "Carrier Pilot" by Norman Hanson (an excellent read!)

At dawn on 21 July 1944, F4Us fr om HMS Illustrious raided Port Blair in the Andaman Islands between India and Thailand. They knocked out the Japanese AAA and destroyed eight Japanese fighters parked beside the air strip. This was an early success for the Eastern Fleet, which by the end of the year, would become the core of the new British Pacific Fleet backing up the US Navy in the invasion of Okinawa by attacking the fields wh ere the kamikaze planes were deployed.

Eventually, I plan to merge all the missions into a single campaign. Comments are welcome.

Map - Normandy 2.0
After Paris fell to the Allies, German units still inside France were ordered to retreat to the German border. A large group of German vehicles was spotted heading toward Belfort Gap, a pass through the mountains along the border.

The 406th Fighter Group was given the job of attacking the enemy vehicles on 7 September 1944. They attacked with bombs and by strafing and destroyed about 300 German vehicles. They then refueled and rearmed and came back and blew up 200 more. The German commander surrendered on the condition the P-47s would halt the attacks and 20,000 German soldiers became Allied POWs.

The attack resulted in the 406th FG receiving the Presidential Unit Citation.
