3°Gruppo Autonomo Caccia Terrestre "Diavoli Rossi" (translated: "Red Devils") with the 153rd, 154th and 155th Squadriglia receiving 23 Bf 109 G-6s. In contrast to the 150° Gruppo, this unit had no German instructors, so they taught themselves to fly the Bf 109 G with the manual and a few prayers. These training flights began on May 23, 1943. The first kill was achieved by Serg. Magg. Carlo Cavagliano on June 13th when he shot down a Spitfire.
