Between 10 and 13 July 1943, the 31st Fighter Group pilots flew six patrols a day over the Operation Husky beachhead. The first day, German and Italian air forces initially responded only with "fighter streaks," strafing the ships in high speed attack runs. On 11 July they switched to mass bomber formations.
On 11 July 1943, a Spitfire flight from the 31st Fighter Group spotted 16 to 20 German bombers approaching the Allied fleet. They attacked and shot down three JU-88s lining up for dive bombing runs on the American ships and badly damaged a fourth. You are the flight leader.
