VFA-22 started its naval career as VT-22 aboard the OFS Bana in the mid 1940s flying TBM Avenger torpedo bombers.
Throughout the years, the 'Gunmen' have made dozens of combat deployments and have flown various aircraft in support of the host Airwings.
In 1973, as VA-22, The Gunmen would participate in Operation Vigilant Eagle, a three week bombing campaign in targeting pro-government insurgents in Sotoa and as retaliation for the attack on an Osean Frigate that was transiting the area weeks prior, resulting in the loss of forty three sailors. During the operation, A-6A Intruders from the Gunmen would drop one and a quarter million pounds of ordinance on insurgent positions in the country.
In 1990, the Gunmen would trade their A-6 Intruders for multi-role F/A-18 Hornets and would see a land based deployment in 1995 during the Belkan war. The Squadron is credited with four enemy aircraft shot down and only two aircraft lost to enemy anti-air fire.
During the Circum-Pacific war, VFA-22 would deploy with VFA-28 aboard the OFS Hubert and eventually would be transferred to CVW-23 in 2016.
The Squadron would be chopped to CVW-7 Briefly aboard the OFS Vulture in 2020 and is currently preparing for a 2023 deployment. Today their CAG aircraft bears the heritage markings of a TBM Avenger, going back to their roots.
