Syria and Russian influence in the Cyprus elections six months ago lead to the election of a hardline government that promised to reunite the island's territory under a single Cyprus government. The government, having received a large amount of financial and social engineering from Russia and Syria, is little more than a puppet government under a defacto dictator. The retired General Christos Nicolaides, code name Willow Swift, reorganized the military under his direct control. Stirring up popular support with retrodict on claiming back the northern part of the island, the country was soon posed to mount a major attempt to return the northern part of the island to their control. With proclamations of Syrian support and the presence of a Russian carrier group in the area the Turks agreed to remove their forces from the island, not confident in their ability to defend the territory without escalating the conflict into a major regional conflict. The territory was recaptured with little fight and President Nicolaides quickly proclaimed himself the "Great Reclaimer".
Bolstered by support from Greek Cypriot hardliners, Turkish Cypriots were removed from the conquered territory and relocated to temporary holding locations in the south. Influencers in the government are reportedly considering expanding the effort to Turkish Cypriots in the southern areas too. At the same time, President Nicolaides began to pull Cyprus away from the West and shift towards Syria and Russia. Existing agreements quickly began to fall apart, and Cyprus is functionally separated from the EU at this time. Military engagements were also curtailed. Syria provided substantial aid in military equipment to include SAMs, anti-ship missiles, artillery, and armored vehicles. The new government requested that the British remove their troops from the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia but the British refused, citing the London and Zürich Agreements and the need to protect British citizens living on the island.
In anticipation of a potential conflict, the British and US began to organize a response force. Forces stationed in Turkey were not sufficient due to anticipated Syrian assistance to defend the new Cyprus government. However, before the force could arrive the Cyprus military moved to isolate the British forces. After a stand-off lasting several days and with some minor skirmishes, the forces on the island requested the opportunity to airlift off the island but were denied. Running low on supplies and outnumbered, the forces eventually surrendered. The forces were moved to the British base at Akrotiri and their equipment was quickly claimed.
The bold capture and holding hostage of the British forces were taken as an attack on British sovereign ground and NATO nations quickly supported military intervention to free the British forces, remove the government of Pres. Nicolaides, free the Turkish Cypriots and bring Cyprus back into the fold of EU influence. Syria has already pledged to defend Cyprus from any aggression, and Russia has pledged support in the form of equipment through back channels. A combined US and British carrier forces approach as land forces begin to stage in Turkey. Shaping operations will begin soon, laying the groundwork for the first strikes.
