Na sklonku 70.1et byl do výzbroje ČSLA zaveden nový bi­tevní vrtulník Mi-24, který se na borském letišti poprvé obje­vil v srpnu 1982 v rámci odloučené 4.letky 5l.vrtulníkového pluku se sídlem v Prostějově. O dva roky později se personál 11.vrtulníkové letky přeškolil na stroje Mi-24D a Mi-17, kterými byla 11. vrtulníková letka postupně vybavována. V srpnu 1984 došlo ke sloučení 11.letky a odloučené 4.letky 51.vrtulníkového pluku. V dubnu 1985 byl na borském letišti v rámci Západního vo­jenského okruhu ustaven nový vrtulníkový útvar. 11.letka, mající v té době již čtyři roje Mi-24D a dva roje Mi-17, byla z rozhodnutí MNO přetransformována do 11. vrtulníkového pluku (vrp) s úkolem podporovat a přepravovat vrtulníky Mi­24D a Mi-17 pozemní vojska a v součinnosti s PVOS působit s bitevními stroji v rámci ostrahy státní hranice. O necelé dva roky později začal být pluk přezbrojován na stroje Mi-24V (https://www.classictrainers.cz/cs/provas/historie-letiste-plzen-line/#prettyPhoto)
