Situation:
2016
Two months ago Israel launched an aggressive campaign to seize control of the Suez Canal away from Egypt. A surprise attack by air forces eliminated Egyption defensive positions which were in a green alert status, followed by a ground assault push into Egypt along with paratrooper drops at the Suez. After a month of fighting, Israel successfully took control of the canal.
As the remains of Egypt’s military have spooled up to full combat readiness, Egypt has begun striking back at the heart of Israel’s infrastructure to put pressure on Israel’s prime minister, Yitzhak Shamir. With their forces concentrated along the front line protecting their hold on the Suez, there are openings for strikes within Israel against critical assets which are poorly protected. In particular, Egypt is targeting Israel’s energy sector to demonstrate the true cost of their ambitions.
Today’s target is the newly constructed Ashalim Solar Thermal Plant (N30°57.810 E034°43.749) located in the Negev Desert near Ruakh ba-Midbar, 20 miles inside Israel’s border with Egypt. The new solar tower is the tallest tower in Israel, and its destruction will be a significant hit to the region’s energy productions, as well as a symbolic hit.
