Many are familiar with the Dambusters Squadron 617 attack on the Rhur Dams during WW2. However not many are aware of an American dambuster mission that occured during the Korean war. The mission occured on May 1 1951, where 8 Skyraiders of VA-195, each carrying a modified 2000 lb torpedo, attacked the Hwacheon Dam 50 miles northeast of Seoul. This mission is an attempt to recreate that mission giving the limitations of DCS. I have substituted P47's for the Sky Raiders VA-195and P51's for FU Cosairs of VF-192 and VF-193. I have not attempted to make a complete recreation of the mission, but wanted to create a fun mission the replicates some aspects of the real mission. This mission is best flown with some buddies but you could try to do it alone.
Operation Rugged was a US 7th Calvary led UN operation during the Korean war to sieze the area around the Hwacheon Dam. (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Rugged). After some initial gains the UN troops were pushed away from the dam and a series of high altitude bomb attacks on the dam were carried out. When these failed a low level attack by Sky Raiders of VA-195 carring modified 2000 lb torpedoes was ordered to significantly damage the spill gates and to prevent the Chines from using then as a weapon. The Sky Raiders had to fly to the dam over the reservoire in pairs under 100 feet above the resevoire at a speed less than 160 mile per hour. This made them sitting ducks for any flak situated along the reservoire.
In this mission you will fly P47's carrying a full bomb load out to fly to the reservoire behind the dam and them come in at low altitude to hit the spill gates located at the bottom of the reservoire side of the dam. The Chinese flak will be randomly generated and will vary from light to extremely high. You also have a 25% chance of a enemy Mig 15's showing up. I hope this may generate some sort of replayability in the mission. I have placed in some air start P47's in case you get shot down by flak, but please note they will not trigger events so use them as a last resort.
You will start in a warm fully running P47 on a parking spot at an airfield.
