With the large purchase of aircraft in 1997, the OADF had little need for the Su-24 ‘Fencer’ due to the F-111 ‘Aardvark’ already filling the super-sonic tactical bomber role, This opened multiple states to adopt the fighter instead into their reserve components, one of which being North Gate with the 260th Tactical Fighter Squadron ‘Pale Horse’.
Accepting the aircraft in 1998 to replace older F-4D Phantoms in the inventory, the Pale Horses would operate around the Eaglin Strait, while not directly assigned to the waterway’s security mission.
