On October 14, 1972, the VF-1 Squadron was officially established at NAS Miramar and began receiving F-14A on July 1, 1973. The first voyage of the VF-1 squadron equipped with F-14 was from September 17, 1974 to May 20, 1975, when it was under the jurisdiction of the Enterprise (CVN-65 Enterprise) and the 14th Aviation Regiment (CVW-14) along with the VF-2. At that time, the Vietnam War was nearing its end, and the F-14 of VF-1 and VF-2 had conducted patrol missions over Vietnam, but there were no results.
In 1980, VF-1 was assigned to the 2nd Aviation Regiment (CVW-2) of the CV-61 Ranger. In 1984, he sailed on the CV-63 Kitty Hawk and created a 22000 hour continuous safe flight. In 1986, the VF-1 returned to the CV-61 Ranger and participated in the Gulf War in 1991. Squadron captains CDR Ron McElraft and Lt Stuart Broce (F-14A NE103 BuNo.162603) used AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles to shoot down a Mi-8 helicopter. This is the only achievement of the F-14 in the Gulf War.
After the retirement of the CV-61 Ranger in 1993, the VF-1 was not assigned to an aircraft carrier and operated at the NAS Miramar Naval Air Base. Later, the US Navy decided to reduce the number of F-14 squadrons, and the VF-1 disbanded on October 1, 1993.
