SITUATION:
Situation of the Region: The Indian Ocean. Nothing remembers the civilization and its origins, the human being and its primeval activities like these waters. These waters remember the first sea lanes and its travelers. These waters remember ancient China and India, Ur and Babylon and their former glory. They remember the human being with its successes and misfortunes. They also remember how fr om time to time human blood stained them. Nothing has changed, everything remains as it was in the past, because the present is based on these distant memories.
It's already long time that in the Gulf of Aden and Somali Sea shipping has become dangerous because of piracy. Piracy, which was originally a struggle against oppressors and then it turned into a means of livelihood. The situation worsened when civil war broke out in Somalia in 2009. In some cases taking advantage from the prevailing chaos, in some cases under the refuge of local military groups, periodic armed attacks began to be registered on commercial, fishing and even on military vessels.
The situation reached its focal point when one of the local military groups, Al-Shabaab, had a several military successes in 2010, capturing ports and important cities in the country. Based on these achievements and for to ensure their sustainability, al-Shabaab's military command also undertook a series of operations at sea, disrupting trade routes as a result. While there were bloody battles on land, this naval group continued its terror at sea under the command of Abdullah Mohamed Nur, a man who believes that soul of the ancient Carthaginian admiral Atarbas is his protector. The situation prompted the UN to deploy troops to the Republic of Seychelles, which easily could be targeted by al-Shabaab forces. The republic is located in the Somali Sea segment of the Indian Ocean, in the Seychelles Archipelago. Seychelles People's Defence Force is mainly armed with old Soviet equipment - BTR 152s, BRDMs, D-30 artillery units and BM-21 Grads. There is also Shorland armored vehicles in the arsenal. The fleet is made up of patrolboats, maximum able to fight illegal fishing and lightly armed piracy.
The main island is also home to US "MQ-9 Reaper" UAV base, along with several helicopters. The base's main task is anti-piracy measures in Somalia.
Situation in the Republic of Seychelles: On October 18th, the "Baltic Wind" bulk carrier sailing under the Liberian flag was attacked and hijacked by Al-Shabaab terrorist forces in the Gulf of Aden. It was transporting grain from Novorossiysk to Jakarta. After keeping it in the port for several days, along with three other ships was loaded with offensive military equipment and began the sailing towards the Seychelles archipelago. The actual attack on the islands began on the night of October 26th, with two wings. Without meeting any resistance, the terrorists have taken over "Island 3", wh ere the Bulker is currently anchored. The second wing, with three ships attacked the main port of the republic. By achieving some success, they managed to unload military equipment, mainly MBTs. It should be noted that in the first hours of the clash, the terrorists had already managed to sink three patrol boats and destroy an entire company, which was raised in alarm to confront them. Currently, the Seychelles People's Defense Force is almost completely destroyed. All that was left of their army is four BRDMs and some air defence guns. If there weren't the intervention of the UN troops and the strikes of MQ-9 Reapers, the situation would have been much worse. Unfortunately we lost one of our UAVs. It was shot down by Seacat missile, launched fr om one of their boats.
At the moment, the enemy is suppressed and positioned in the port area, wh ere the UN transport and supply ship is anchored. The terrorists have already deployed KS-19 anti-aircraft guns on the resort island near the port. The unloaded three terrorist vessels are located 5 km west of the port, one of them is a freighter.
I consider it necessary to say that the local troops by suffering heavy losses, began the shelling of the port with D-30 artillery battery. This was already a signal that the safety of both locals and tourists means nothing. Later terrorists managed to destroy D-30 battery too.
Now, in the republic is declared anti-terrorist operation regime. All civilian flights have been cancelled.
By the evening we will have additional forces from the French Reunion base.
The weather is dry, the wind is southeastern. From November starts the rainy seasons and the wind will blow from northwest.
