The first delivery of the Lockheed P-3C Orion Update II was in November 1981. The #301 came into service on feb 1st 1982.
In the Netherlands the P-3Cs flew from Valkenburg with no. 320 squadron as part of the MARPAT (maritime patrol aircraft group).
From 1993 onwards, about 2 P-3C aircraft of VSQ 320 were also usually deployed on Hato Curaçao.
The Orions were always in rotation and were used in the Caribbean, mainly for anti-drug reconnaissance.
From 1996, VSQ 321 took care of the training task. The Orion was excellent for its task, highly automated and could navigate and operate very accurately. It was used by MarineLuchtvaartDienst as an anti-submarine and patrol aircraft.
Orions were also used on missions elsewhere in the world, even sometimes as a "transport box". The Orion was also deployed during the wars in the former Yugoslavia. The MLD aircraft flew mainly from the Italian base Sigonella in support of NATO operations. They were equipped with a digital camera system with live connection, a "missile warning" system and "chaff/flare dispensers" as self-protection against radar or infrared guided missiles.
In May 2000 it was decided to modernize the Orion fleet with the “Capability Upkeep Program” (CUP).
On January 1, 2005, all Dutch MLD Orions lost their operational status and VSQ 320 and 321 were disbanded.
