After the German defeat at Mortain, two German armies retreated east from Normandy. They were pursued by US, British and Canadian units until they were stopped at the Dives River between Falaise and Argentan. Fire from Canadian and Polish tanks and artillery created a huge German traffic jam and the RAF and 9th US Air Force had a Killing Field. About 10,000 German troops were killed, 50,000 surrendered and 20,000 escaped. It was the final chapter of the Normandy Campaign.
