Despite flying combat missions with JG 52 during the Phoney War, the Battle of Britain, and the Battle of Crete, Adolf Dickfeld did not open his account until Operation Barbarossa by downing two Soviet bombers on 26JUN41.  He continued to score steadily against the Soviets, downing five I-15 on 23 October and being credited with another 11 victories in one day on 08MAY42.  He scored his 100th victory on 18MAY42, for which he was awarded Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves. Dickfeld was reassigned to the Mediterranean Theater in November 1942, where he flew the Fw 190 as Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG 2 from San Pietro, Italy.  Subsequently he was assigned as Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG 11 and then held several staff positions.  He was officially credited with 136 aerial victories on 1,072 combat sorties.  His last victory was a P-47 while flying an He 162 Salamander, one of only a handful of victoried credited to the type.  Adolph Dickfeld survived the war, he passed away in 2009 at the age of 99.
