In a move that took many by surprise, PET, then Prime Minister of Canada decided to try to sway France into staying in NATO by purchasing the newly designed Mirage F1. Since many RCAF members whined about having to move to Germany and the RCAF in tears after losing its fast low flying death trap, PET had really no choice in the matter and pushed the defense minister into 4 rounds of fruitless negotiations over a 16 month long period which ended in purchasing the Dassault aircraft at 69% over their total cost.
