I know very little about VMFA-242. A quick Wikipedia search shows the squadron was formed in 1943. It saw extensive combat in the Pacific in 1944 and 1945. During the Cold War, VMFA-242 "Bats" flew Skyhawks and Intruders. It did not participate in Desert Storm. Immediately after, the squadron transitioned to the F/A-18D Hornet. As far as I can tell, it never flew the single-seat Hornet. In the Hornet, "Bats" specialized in antiship strike, strike, and EW missions. In 2021, VMFA-242 transitioned to the single-seat F-35B.
