After the Germans departed North Africa, preparations began for the invasion of Sicily. Pantelleria, an Italian island off the coast of Sicily, held a large Italian air base. The Allies decided to use it as a dress rehearsal for Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. It was heavily bombed by USAAF and RAF bombers with fighters flying escort and TARCAP (Target Combat Air Patrol) missions aimed at protecting the bombers. In four days, the 31st Fighter Group, flying in support of the bombers shot down 28 enemy aircraft attempting to defend Pantelleria.
