After the Royal Nordlands Air Force phased out their Hawker Hunters in 1968, the squadron was deactivated. However, following the conclusion of the Belkan War, the RNLAF recognized the strategic significance of a dedicated strike squadron. In 1997, two years after the war's end, the RNLAF introduced its first F-15E aircraft. Towards the close of 1997, after 29 years of dormancy, the 114 Squadron was reactivated, now equipped with F-15E Strike Eagles.
The squadron's first operational deployment occurred nine years later during the Continental War. The "Bliksemrijders," as they are known, played a pivotal role in various combat missions throughout the conflict. The capabilities of the F-15E Strike Eagles were fully utilized, marking a triumphant return to active service for the squadron.
