The area on the eastern coast the Ausu Nonne Sea was been an area of contrast for millennia. Societies driven by agriculture, commerce, soldiers for hire, and most of all salt. Conquests by ancient and contemporary powers, separated by times of tribal and religious conflict, resulted in a region with deep scars of resentment and suspicion. After the fall of the last great colonial power 200 years ago the region was carved into independent nations. Each nation suffered its own difficulties, driven by internal and external influences before stable governments were able to bring a semblance of order. No two countries symbolized this cycle of contention more than the Inji Republic and the Tinihai Kingdom. Upon gaining independence the two countries suffered through many tribal conflicts, focused on ages-old grievances of territory and resources. The Inji Republic was created by the primary tribal power in the region, ruling over several smaller tribes in the region in a rough confederation. The republic grew as more tribes came into the fold, attracted by the parliamentary government set up in the latter half of the 1800s. Focused on representing a diverse population, the central government was weakened by individual regions maintaining autonomy. The Tinihai Kingdom, in contrast, was dominated from its inception by a powerful chieftain that quickly took advantage of the power gap to consolidate power into a monarchy. The royal family quickly gained full control of the country, setting up a central government and strong military.
Two of the many conflicts between these countries evolved into full-on war; the Tinihai Kingdom gained territory and resources with great destruction on both sides. The second of these conflicts, ending 73 years ago, resulted in the Inji Republic losing valuable agricultural resources. This loss of valuable resources resulted in a large-scale famine in Inji, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people. The Tinihai Kingdom also gained territory containing most of Inji's natural resources, significantly
hindering the Inji's wealth and ability to develop their country as the region began to rapidly industrialize. The result was the Tinihai Kingdom thriving; with population and wealth growing significantly faster than in the Inji Republic. As a result, the Tinihai Kingdom became the central power in the region and made military conquests of other nations in the region. The Inji Republic struggled to care for its citizens, which included hundreds of thousands of displaced tribal populations.
This status quo continued for much of the last century. While the Tinihai Kingdom showed no signs of the final conquest of the Inji Republic, due to the inevitable humanitarian crisis and lack of desirable resources, the Inji Republic was in no position to regain its prior glory. That is, until 15 years ago. Large deposits of a rare new mineral compound, called Cavorite, with unique gravitational properties, were discovered in a mine in Republic territory. Many scientists traveled from the top technological countries to examine the mineral to determine its potential uses. After many years of research, the Inji Republic was being inundated with proposals from the top nations of the world for the mining of the large mineral deposits which, to date, have only been located within the Inji Republic. The proposals would result in Inji Republic reaching never-before-thought-of levels of wealth, seemingly overnight.
The Tinihai Kingdom now shows a keen interest in the potential value of Cavorite; from both a technological standpoint and an economic standpoint. While the Tinihai Kingdom has made no overt threats to the Inji Republic, it is hard to ignore the increased rhetoric of potential annexation. The royal family has made many public comments about the “primal ownership” of the lands in the Inji Republic, populating the international press with their propaganda. Nationalistic fervor is at an all-time high, and many outside experts view an armed conflict as inevitable. Kingdom military forces have reached a never before seen level of training, with multiple exercises occurring near the border between the two countries. A 3rd Injian Conflict appears on the horizon.
In the meantime, border guards have reported multiple breaches of the border by Kingdom forces. These are most likely special forces raids seeking to gather intelligence on Republic forces in the region, Cavorite mining locations, and approach radicals in the extremes of the Republic for potential insurgent operations. Incursions of Republic airspace are also increasing, and seem to be the preluding for potential air operations by the Kingdom against Republic forces. The leading nations of the world
detest the idea of the sole supply of Cavorite in the world under the control of a regime universally seen as corrupt and destabilizing to the region. While they are unwilling, at this time, to deploy regular forces to the region, they have promised assistance through military sales and “non-conventional” forces. One of these units is the 73rd Special Operations Squadron.
73rd Special Operations Squadron
The 73rd Special Operations Squadron, known as Omega Squadron, is a highly classified unit within the world-leading Gilania Air Force. Never officially acknowledged by the Gilanian military, the unit was created over 50 years ago to undertake extremely high-risk and politically sensitive missions. Any military conflict involving Gilanian forces was proceeded by operations involving the Omegas and included daring long-range strikes on enemy nuclear facilities, decapitation strikes in the heart of opposing capitals, and an attack on an enemy aircraft carrier in the middle of a typhoon. Or so the stories go. The unit answers directly to the head of the Gilanian military and is routinely provided as a surgical military option to the head of state. They are unofficially referred to as “The Shadows”. Omega Squadron consists of only two flights of combat pilots, recruiting only the very top pilots with many years of experience and impeccable skills. With nearly a limitless budget line, the unit purchases aircraft from all over the world. Partially to take advantage of unique capabilities specific airframes offer, but primarily to provide deniability in case of a lost aircraft. The two primary flights are supported by transport, maintenance, and security forces of their own and can operate completely autonomously from unprepared, and even enemy, airfields. Within 48 hours of notice, the unit can be operating out of any airfield in the world. 30 hours ago, the call went out.
