185th FG 174th FS Iowa Air Guard The Bats without nose art
The 185th FG operated F-16's from 1991 until the unit converted to KC-135's in 2003. The 174th FS previously flew F-51's, F-100's and A-7D's. The unit's most famous member having been Brig Gen. Bud Day, who flew MISTY FAC missions over Vietnam. The unit earned the nickname "The Bats" during the Vietnam conflict, coined by the North Vietnamese because of their consistent strikes during the cover of darkness.
