Some of the first American airmen to join the air war over Europe were the volunteers of the RAF’s Eagle Squadrons. In 1942 they were transferred to the Mighty Eighth Air Force under the 4th Fighter Group, based in Debden, Essex. The 4th was the first fighter group to penetrate German airspace, the first to escort bombers over Berlin, and led the first shuttle mission from England to Russia. Under the indomitable leadership of Colonel Don Blakeslee, they became the highest scoring unit of the USAAF, destroying 1,016 enemy aircraft in the air and on the ground.

Created by the same team behind the Spitfire LF Mk.IX: Epsom Campaign, the Charnwood Campaign is a historically-based campaign for the P-51D Mustang over Normandy in July 1944. The Charnwood campaign reproduces P-51D missions flown in support of the allied breakout of Normandy and the eventual capture of Caen. Given the Mustang’s combination of air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities (bombs and rockets), this campaign offers a wealth of mission types and challenges. Each mission is based on a real missions, down to the weather, mission times, squadrons, mission tasks, and allied and axis locations.

The DCS: Sinai map is focused on the Sinai Peninsula, located between the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba with eastern Egypt to the west and southern Israel to the east. Since ancient times, it has been a strategic location rich in resources, nature, religion, and history. The map includes a variety of landscapes from deserts and mountains in the south to oasis and coastlines in the north. A significant point of interest is the Suez Canal - an artificial waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea that provides a shorter route between Europe and Asia. It marks a conditional border between Africa and Asia, which makes it politically significant for regional security and stability.

The powerful and deadly Messerschmitt Bf-109 was the mainstay of the Luftwaffe’s fighter arm throughout World War II, scoring more aerial victories than any other type. Thirteen Bf 109 pilots claimed more than 200 victories apiece, while two of these ‘Experten’, ‘Bubi’ Hartmann and ‘Gerd’ Barkhorn, each shot down more than 300 enemy aircraft. In the early years of the war, the speed, handling characteristics and firepower of the Bf 109E 'Emils' gave many Allied Hurricane and Spitfire pilots a nasty shock.
With a top speed of 690 km/h (429 mph) at 7,400 m (24,280 ft), a powerful 2,000 horsepower Daimler-Benz 605D engine and a pressurized cabin, the K-4 ‘Kurfürst’ was the best and final version of the Bf-109 to see service. Armed with one 30-mm Mk 108 cannon and two 13-mm Mk 131 machine guns, the K-4’s agility made it more than a match for most Allied fighters, while its blistering firepower made it the scourge of high-flying enemy bombers.
Excelling both as a pure fighter and in the ground attack role, the powerful Republic P-47D Thunderbolt gave Allied Air Forces a whole new cutting edge in World War 2. Nicknamed the ‘Jug’, its eight M2 Browning .50-calibre (12.7 mm) machine guns packed a devastating punch: the P-47D could fire 3,400 rounds of ammunition in a continuous, 30-second stream of high-explosive lead, shredding any enemy aircraft in its sights.
With a bubble canopy providing great all-round visibility, a range of 1,000 miles at 10,000 feet and a massive 18-cylinder, 2,600-horsepower R-2800-59 Double Wasp turbocharged radial engine giving it a top speed of 428 mph, the Jug acted as a highly effective Allied bomber escort in raids on Nazi-occupied Europe. More than twice the weight of the Spitfire, its sheer size, rugged construction and armoured cockpit meant the P-47D could shrug off astonishing amounts of enemy fire.
