>>> SERVICE HISTORY

On 1980 the Swedish Government launched a competition to find a Viggen successor, Saab and other major swedish companies joined and formed the consortium IG JAS, to develop a new multirole combat aircraft.

The development contract was signed on June 1982 and the workshare was 65% Saab, 16% Ericsson, 15% Volvo-Aero and 4% FFV. On April 1983 the Swedish Air Force ordered a first batch of 30 aircrafts.

Enngine tests began on 1984 and the first of five prototypes rolled out on April 1987. Severe problems with its fly-by-wire software delayed the first flight to December 1988. A prototype landing accident on February 1989 delayed the program still more. On August 1993 a second Gripen crash caused a suspension on the flight program until December 1993.
