Islamist opposition forces have orchestrated a coup in Lebanon and have managed to seize power from the democratically elected and pro-western government after the administration brokered a peace deal with the Israeli's.
With the help of the Syrian Air Force as well as defectors embedded within the Lebonese Defence Force, the rebels managed to capture Rene Mouawad and Rayak Air Bases, preventing the LAF from providing government forces with sorely needed air support during the initial takeover.
Those aircraft, including several recently purchased Ex-Saudi F-5E Tigers, now reside in rebel hands and are being used in support of the new regime. It is unknown, however, how many combat-worthy pilots have defected to the other side, but it is presumed that Syrian volunteer pilots will take up any slack, should the Rebels require their expertise.
Most of the previous government has either already fled the country or has been captured by rebel forces. Although some of the old leadership along with the remaining remnants of the defense force have managed to withdraw to Tripoli and for the time being, have secured the city as well as Wujah Al Hajar airfield to the southwest.
The US has since declared a no-fly zone over Lebanon, reassigning the 6th Fleet, currently on deployment in the Med, to enforce it. The battlegroup, consisting of two Nimitz-class carriers as well as an amphibious assault ship and their accompanying escort vessels are currently steaming off the coast of Haifa, awaiting the go-ahead to begin airstrikes on rebel-held facilities and other high-value targets.
Due to the recent peace accords, as well as a UN resolution, the IDF has had its hands tied, as Israeli Defence Forces entering Lebanese territory has been expressly forbidden as part of the newly formed contract, and reneging on their pledge so soon, even to aid the legitimate government, would only serve to further strain Israeli-Arab relations as well as sour any proposed future peace deals in the region...
The Israeli's have, however, granted the US the use of their airspace to conduct non-offensive operations such as tanking and surveillance.
Whether the Syrians will continue to support the coup in lieu of the no-fly zone and the 6th Fleet's arrival is unknown at this stage. However, the rebels, now being adequately armed, can be expected to put up stiff resistance against any task force aircraft intruding into Lebanese airspace...
