The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is an on-going UN-NATO peacekeeping mission in south Lebanon.
The "ITALAIR" Task Force is the Italian helicopter component deployed with UNIFIL in south Lebanon, it is composed of 6 AB 212 twin-turbine helicopters; its main task is to patrol and monitor UNIFIL’s vast area of operations, and provide transport and emergency evacuation supports when needed.
UNIFIL is an on-going UN-NATO peacekeeping mission to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, in order to ensure that the government of Lebanon would restore its effective authority in the area, monitor the cessation of hostilities; accompany and support the Lebanese Armed Forces as they deploy throughout the south of Lebanon; and extend its assistance to help ensure humanitarian access to civilian populations and the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons.
In its nearly 41 years of service in south Lebanon, ITALAIR has completed approximately 43,000 flight hours, transported 175,100 passengers, carried out 1,275 medical evacuations for a total of 49,750 flight missions (as of March 2020).
Italy is the second major contributor of troops to UNIFIL with some 1,100 peacekeepers deployed to support the Mission’s mandate.
