L’SA342 Gazelle è un elicottero leggero da ricognizione/attacco e trasporto.è stato introdotto nel 1968 come risultato della collaborazione tra Aérospatiale e la Westland Aircraft.Utilizzato da 23 Nazioni, il Gazelle è stato impiegato in operazioni di combattimento in tutto il mondo, inclusa la Guerra del Golfo nel 1991, la Guerra in Libano del 1982, il conflitto in Siria, e molti altri conflitti.
Il Gazelle è alimentato da un motore a turbina singolo collegato alle pale in Glasfaserverstärkter Kunststoff - GFK (vetroresina) del rotore principale con un sistema “bearingless” (senza cuscinetti) sviluppato da Bölkow GmbH. E’ stato anche il primo elicottero ad introdurre il caratteristico rotore di coda “Fenestron”.
