following the '73 war and Egypt's Rapprochement to the west they started looking to a new fighter to complement the MiG-21s that served as the backbone of their fleet.
Initial interest for the F-5E was shown when Egyptian President Anwar el Sadat visited Washington requesting the delivery of 20-24 Northrop F-5E without success, request that was renewed beginning of 1978, this time for 30-40 aircrafts and this time with success. The Egyptian government obtained a letter of offer covering 42 F-5E and 8 F-5F at a total cost of 400m$, Saudi Arabia financing the deal for 525m$. the first 8 F-5s were finished and Egyptian Pilots had commenced training in the US when Saudi Funding dried up when the initial estimates came out to be well under what was the actual cost, and shortly after the Peace between Egypt and Israel Saudi Arabia cancelled the deal following Egypt's fall out with the Arab League, the aircraft were then given to Yemen instead.
