In late March 1986, VF-33 was aboard USS America (CV-66) when she crossed Gaddafi's "Line of Death" into the Gulf of Sidra. Under Gaddafi, Libya's air force grew to include Soviet fighters including the Su-22 and MiG-23 (both of which met their ends at the hands of F-14s), as well as the MiG-25 "Foxbat" interceptor.
