The year 1943 saw some of the fiercest aerial battles of the war over Western Europe. USAAF Flying Fortresses and Liberators pushed ever deeper into the heart of the Third Reich, drawing the full fury of the Luftwaffe. Limited by their range, the escort fighters fought desperately to protect their big friends. Among the most successful units was the 4th Fighter Group at Debden, a group of former Eagle Squadron pilots, who traded their graceful Spitfires for the rugged P-47 Thunderbolt.
