Seized by the Germans in June 1940 during the Battle of France, Villacoublay was used as a Luftwaffe military airfield during the occupation. Known units assigned (all from Luftflotte 3, Fliegerkorps IV): Kampfgeschwader 55 (KG 55) 21 June 1940 – 16 June 1941 Heinkel He 111P/H (Fusalage Code: G1+)

History according to GOOGLE:
Starting June 9, the American engineers of the 834th Engineer Aviation Battalion build an aerodrome called ALG A-01, one kilometer east of the battery. The furious fights that took place in the area delayed its installation which ends June 13. The airfield became the main base of the 366th Fighter Group until August 25 and remained operational until September 5, 1944.

History according to Google:
Opened in 1944, Lymington was a prototype for the type of temporary Advanced Landing Ground type airfield which would be built in France after D-Day, when the need for advanced landing fields would become urgent as the Allied forces moved east across France and Germany. It was used by the Royal Air Force, Canadian and the United States Army Air Forces. It was closed in 1946 after two years of being utilized as a storage area for the Royal Navy.

Lymington was known as USAAF Station AAF-551 for security reasons by the USAAF during the war, and by which it was referred to instead of location. Its USAAF Station Code was "LY".

History According to GOOGLE:
After the liberation of the area by Allied Forces in 1944, engineers of the Ninth Air Force IX Engineering Command began construction of a combat Advanced Landing Ground outside of the town. Declared operational on 2 August, the airfield was designated as "A-16", it was used by the 36th Fighter Group which flew P-47 Thunderbolts until late August when the unit moved into Central France.

Royal Air Force
The Royal Air Force moved into Gravesend in 1937 when a Flying Training School began operating de Havilland Tiger Moths and Hawker Harts at the airfield.  When the RAF requisitioned the entire aerodrome in 1939 at the beginning of the war they made it a sector airfield for Biggin Hill, as one of the airfields of 11 Group.  Many other units also occupied the station during the war years, such as 71 Squadron, which arrived 14 August 1942 for the Dieppe Raid, 92 Squadron (24 September 1941). No. 306 Polish Fighter Squadron, arriving 11 August 1943 and 65 Squadron, which arrived 29 July 1943, and was the first Squadron to be issued with the North American Mustang III in December – making Gravesend the first RAF base to operate it.
