The 23rd Tactical Fighter Squadron “Fighting Hawks” is an F-16C Unit based out of Spangdahlem Air Base, in west Germany and is assigned to the 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing. Though based in Germany since the end of the Second World War, the unit transitioned from a traditional fighter role, to a Suppression of Enemy Air Defense Role (SEAD) in 1972 following the units adoption of the F-4E and specifically the F-4G ‘Wild Weasels’. In 1987 the Fighting Hawks would receive their first F-16 to replace the aging Phantoms, completing the transition following their Gulf War deployment in late 1991. The Squadron would become the USAF-Europe’s only SEAD squadron in 1995, and support NATO forces in Operation Deliberate Force that same year. Today the Squadron still flies from Spangdahlem contributing to the US’ Mission in Europe.
