Fr om the first days of the Afghan war, the militants of the field commander Ahmad Shah Massoud began methodically firing at Soviet columns passing through the Panjshir Gorge. Here, through the Salang pass, there was a highway connecting Kabul with the territory of the USSR.
The command of the 40th Army did everything possible to control the Panjshir - the supply of the troops depended on this. Three months after entering Afghanistan, Soviet military leaders began active actions to neutralize the units of the Panjshir Lion, as Masud was called by the dushmans themselves.
A tactical grouping of five battalions with a total strength of one thousand bayonets was formed. Fire support was provided by a helicopter squadron and artillery units. Fighting began on April 9, 1980 at five in the morning. Soviet troops on the move took the settlement of Pasi-Shahi-Mardan, wh ere the headquarters of Massoud's group was located. Immediately, the soldiers of the 56th separate airborne assault brigade dismounted and cleared the gorge 30 kilometers inland to the northeast.
