It´s 1989. The Warsaw Pact is crumbling and so is the Berlin wall.
As tensions between Israeli and Arab states rose the Warsaw Pact states agreed to support the Arab states once again hoping that a success in foreign policies would appease its own peoples and unite them behind their leaders.
And so the political leader of the GDR, Erich Honecker, had decided to support Syria as part of the Red Task Force with aircraft, armor and personnel. The plan is to attack Turkey´s east flank...
On the blue side however, Bundeswehr units from West Germany have been mobilized in response to take part in a huge NATO defense force along the Syrian-Turkish border.

For the first time in history Germans will have to fight Germans...

In 1973, the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) provided Syria with military equipment and personnel as part of a Warsaw Pact aid to the Arab states against Israel in the Yom Kippur war. It was called the "Geheimoperation Aleppo", or secret operation to take place on the airfield of Aleppo.
At least 12 MiG-21M were delivered by air transport with 6 An-12 transport aircraft showing civilian Aeroflot markings.
In the end these arms deliveries helped the Arabs negotiate a ceasefire agreement.

Now it's the year 1989. The Warsaw Pact is crumbling and so is the Berlin wall.

Now let's imagine: What if history changed this time and the political leader of the GDR, Erich Honecker, had decided not to withdraw fr om power without violence? Of course he would need a political success then...

As tensions between Israeli and Arab states rose in parallel the Warsaw Pact states agreed to support the Arab states once again hoping that a success in foreign policies would appease its own peoples and unite them behind their leaders.

This brought NATO to the scene and it was decided to support Israel by a relief attack from the north against Syria.

The Cold War had gone hot...

Intelligence services have reported that the GDR has again set up a base at Aleppo Airport. This time they not only deliver weapons but also take part in the battle with their own strength. It is called "Operation Aleppo II".
The first 4 East-German MiG-21MF's are currently unloaded at the airport, as an offensive against the eastern flank of the NATO state Turkey is expected in the next few days.
This morning Israeli forces carried out a large-scale attack in the Golan Heights both by land and in the air to separate the Syrian troops from the rest of the Arab forces. The fighting continues until the hour and a large part of the Syrian air force is bound in the south.

That's the gap in their air defense to the north our NATO commanders have been waiting for.

An armed reconnaissance force, consisting of Leopard-2-tanks and grenadier forces from PzBrig20 from Iserlohn, West Germany, crossed the Syrian-Turkish border an hour ago and is advancing towards Aleppo. As only individual armored NVA units have holed up along Highway 214, the convoy is to reach the suburban of Aleppo no later than 7 p.m. local time.

We will launch a large-scale NATO airstrike from Incirlik Airport against Aleppo airport at 6:00 p.m. local time. Sorties from Belgium, Turkey, Spain, the USA and the Federal Republic of Germany are scheduled to prevent the NVA air support to attack the Bundeswehr convoy to the North.\

For the first time in history Germans will have to fight Germans...

You are part of Carrier Air Wing Eight, which was embarked on USS Theodore Roosevelt for a Mediterranean deployment. The Carrier group is cruising east of Cyprus and is held in reserve in the event of a surprise counter-offensive by the Arab and Communist forces.

Since 2 MiG-21MF were stored in a reinforced shelter in the southeast of the airport area, a bunker-breaking precision weapon is required.
This is wh ere you come in, Commander. You are the deputy squadron commander of a newly embarked fighter-bomber squadron that has been equipped with brand new F/A-18Cs that still smell like new cars. Half of the unit is still in training, but you have the privilege of being combat-ready.
You and your wingman are equipped with a loadout of 2 "Fat Albert" or AGM-62 Walleye II and an AN/AWW-13 datalink pod.
Now here's your mission briefing, read it carefully to the end:

1. T/O onboard CVN-71 SE of Cyprus after the CAP flights (2x F/A-18).

2. Fly towards WYPT2 climbing to angels 18 @ 350KIAS.

3. Refuel with Shell5-1 (TCN TKR15Y).

4. Advance to and hold over WYPT3 until Push confirmation, then push to WYPT4 (also A/A-BULLS).

5. Once over WYPT4, fence-in and remember: this is 1989, so you don't have GPS available (the receiver was only installed in 1995 on Block 20 C models).
Therefore, you need to update your INS position from time to time, especially before the attack. For that reason, Turkish special forces have established a mobile TACAN station (id BVB on ch09X) on the Turkish-Syrian border.

6. Go on to attack at WYPT5. Do not descend below angels 15 since mobile Igla units are reported in the area. Order your wingman to attack the primary target and cover him. If necessary, complete the attack on the 2 MiG's inside the shelters. If you find juicy secondaries, feel free to attack ;-)

7. Get back to tanker in time and then RTB.

8. Go to the debriefing room. Well-informed sources speculate that this could only have been the first mission. Let's stay vigilant!
