The Falklands War was a 10-week undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982 over two British dependent territories in the South Atlantic: the Falkland Islands and its territorial dependency, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The result of the war was a British victory.
The war began with the newly-in-power militarian leader of Argentina declared independence for the "Malvinas", otherwise known as the British Falkland Islands, which had been a British territory for over 200 years. Argentinian troops promptly invaded the island, which was very lightly defended by Royal Marines. The governor of the islands surrendered quickly.
When the Argentinians didn't vacate the islands after some warning from England, several naval battlegroups were sent to hastily recapture the island, which turned into one of the bloodiest battles in recent British and Argentinian history.
